WHAT AND WHO ARE "HARD"?

I have seen numerous books calling football hooligans and various thugs, in stores such as WH Smiths and others, "Hard Bastards" or people saying they are hard bastards because they kicked the living daylights out of someone when in a gang. For me, that is not "Hard". Neither is someone hard who beats someone up with a weapon or a has a gun in their hand. For me, an hard bastard is someone who faces their fears, or phobias in life, and takes them on and beats them, or has an illness or a disability and doesn't let it beat them, and gets on with life without self-pity or blaming other people.

An hard bastard is someone who speaks their mind and stands up for their beliefs and what they know is correct. An hard bastard is someone who goes through trauma or an awful experience and comes through it. I have no idea why someone who kicks the living daylights out of someone when in a gang or slashes someone's face with a Stanley Knife is classed as an hard bastard.
